How it began and why you're here...

Readfield, Kennebec County, Maine was originally incorporated in 1771 as part of Winthrop. Twenty years later residents voted almost unanimously to separate from Winthrop, and Readfield became incorporated on March 11, 1791. Welcome to this web site where you will meet the courageous men and women who founded our town.

CAMERON, Collin (Collen)

Little is known about this man at this time. I have found only three brief references to the name Cameron in early Readfield. I have seen his first name spelled both Collen and Collin and his last name spelled both Camren and Cameron.

Collin Cameron married Dolly Allen in Readfield in 1799 (To Those Who Led the Way by Potter-Clark, page 101).

On 8/7/1802 (Book 4 Page 174) part of lot #229 (see the 1791 map of Readfield) was sold and included in the boundary description was "...beginning at the southeast corner of the log cabin now occupied by Collin Cameron..."  June 3, 1807 this land was sold by Joel Bean and the description then said "...beginning at the southeast corner of where a log cabin that used to be occupied by Collin Cameron once stood..." (Book 11 Page 350).

In the History of Kennebec County there is also mention of Cameron Hill and from the description it seems to be on Old Kents Hill Road - the first hill after passing Readfield Town Office. That hill is not lot #229, however.

I will add more if / as I find information about Collen Cameron. Please do let me know if you are aware of anything about him and his family!
