HOLMES, Jonathan ~ 1821-1832 in Readfield ~ Chairmaker & Cabinet Maker

Jonathan Holmes was born about 1785, presumably in Monmouth, Maine where he came from in 1821 and bought 22 acres in Readfield - just steps from Bean's sawmill on the east bank of Bean's Mill Stream. He bought the property in Readfield from Milton Bean, whose father Joel O. Bean established a fulling mill, grist mill and sawmill at this location about 1803. Holmes' property was part of lot #200, and located on both the north and south sides of Old Kents Hill Road (current road name). On the east it was bordered by Bean's Mill Stream and the Joel Bean's Mill Pond at high water. On the west his neighbors were Alexander Morrison and land of Joshua Packard (lot#199).
From looking at the 1820 Census in Monmouth it appears Holmes may have been a widower at that time. His occupation was chair maker. When he sold this same property in 1832 his occupation was cabinetmaker.  In 1830 his household consisted of a wife age 50-59 (name of wife was Sarah on the 1832 deed) and a total of six living in the household (1 female under 10-14; 2 females 20-29; and 1 male 15-19). Nothing else is known about Jonathan Holmes at this time, so if anyone has info please do contact me at crossings4u@gmail.com.
