STAIN, John (edited 10/2015 see red font)

John Stain was born in Germany about 1753. d. age 88 September 15, 1841 in Mt. Vernon, ME m. 12/27/1774 in Pownalbourough, ME to Rebecca Emerson d/o Samuel and Rebecca Atwood  Emerson. She b.6/29/1758 in Pownalbourough d. 8/24/1816 in Mt. Vernon.
Stain was counted on the US Census in Mt. Vernon[i]  though he was documented as living in Winthrop in the initial days of settlement. In 1774 Winthrop voted to lay out a road from the point of East Readfield Church (Jesse Lee) to John Stain’s residence, who then lived near the northern boundary of Winthrop (Readfield) near the Mt. Vernon town line.[ii] This was probably the Plains Road (leading through the old Dudley neighborhood).
In 1775 John Stain was one of the original 19 men who enlisted and marched from Winthrop when word first reached town about the Battle at Lexington.[iii]  In 1775 his tax was forgiven for military service.[iv]  His service to community and country continued when in 1778 he was chosen for Winthrop’s Committees of Correspondence and Inspection of Safety.[v]
