SMITH, Cyril 1790 Winthrop US Census 1-0-0-0-0 (revised 7/12/2020)

Cyril Smith was born July 16, 1766 in Tisbury, Dukes, MA on Martha’s Vineyard, the fourth child of Captain Mathias and Comfort (Carpenter) Smith.[1] He m1. Olive Pease abt. 1794 (based on year eldest child born). [2] m2.1824 Mrs. Lucy Trask of Dixfield. [2.5] In 1789 Cyril bought land in Readfield (then still part of Winthrop) from Samuel Mayhew.  A few years later he was involved in some court transaction: in 1804 a law suit was filed against him for ejectment; in 10/1805 there was a coroner’s report in which his name appears. These two court records – both registered with the Kennebec County Supreme Judicial Court - will need further exploration to decipher what situations had presented.[3]  He lived in Readfield most of his adult life - though I have not yet found where he was in 1840. Since he married a woman from Dixfield, ME in 1824, perhaps he was living in that town in 1840? In 1850 – the year he died - he is living in Readfield and listed as a pauper living in the home of Henry J. and Sarah Shaver.[4][4.5] Both Cyril and Olive died in Readfield. He on 10/14/1850 and she on 7/28/1821. Buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery on the same plot with Cyril and Olive is Mrs. Mary D., consort of L.M. Judkins who died (date unreadable). [5]
