Shedd is spelled as Shedd and/or Shed.
John Shedd was on the 1787 Winthrop early census, the 1791 Readfield taxpayers list and the 1800 census in Readfield. He was born in 1762 in Tewksbury, MA and moved to Readfield after his service in the Revolutionary War, having enlisted as a private on July 28, 1780 in Capt. Foster’s Co. In 1832 until his death in 1842 he was enrolled as a Revolutionary War pensioner.
He bought the lower half of Settler’s Lot #117. Built a farm on the property just north of a pond now called Shedd Pond. Married Betsey Hall 1788 d/o and oldest child of Josiah and Amiable (Allen) Hall who moved to Readfield (North Manchester) before 1770. During the winter of 1805-1806 Shedd was harvesting ice on the pond when his team of horses fell through the ice. Badly injured, Shedd clawed his way out. Afterwards he required full time care, costing him a large part of his farm. When Capt, John Gage became owner he named the body of water where he nearly drowned, Shed Pond.
John and Betsey Shedd Shed had 8 children, some moved to other parts of the state. One son, Josiah never married and lived with his parents until well into adulthood, then lived with his brother, John II and family in Augusta the last few decades of his life. The other children were more adventuresome – two moved to Sangerville, two to Mattawamkeag and one to Fort Fairfield.
