How it began and why you're here...
Readfield, Kennebec County, Maine was originally incorporated in 1771 as part of Winthrop. Twenty years later residents voted almost unanimously to separate from Winthrop, and Readfield became incorporated on March 11, 1791. Welcome to this web site where you will meet the courageous men and women who founded our town.
LANE, Ephraim
Ephraim Lane
(Jeremiah, Andrew,
William) was born 9-30-1737 at North St., Hingham Mass. Sometime in 1770-71 he, and brother
James Lane, traveled by boat to Fort Western (Augusta), Maine, then traveled by
blazed trail to Winthrop (now Readfield), Maine. Ephraim settled on lot#212 and was granted that land on
8-12-1772. He later sold lot#212 to James Craig who used the water power
contained within to build a grist mill on what we now refer to as Factory
Square – a historical area in Readfield. Most of Readfield Corner now sits on lot#212.
After he sold his property to James Craig he moved to Fayette (then called
Sterling) in December 1789 where he died in 1801-02. His will was recorded 1790, probated
11-15-1803 at Kennebec County Registry of Deeds. At that time he had the
following children living in Fayette: Ebenezer, John, Jeremiah, and Elijah.
