MACOMBER, William

Part of what remains of Macomber farm (later Selden Smith)
foundation in Macdonald Woods (Kennebec Land Trust) in
Readfield. Located on public lands.
Macomber, William married Sarah “Sally” Hatch in Marshfield, MA on December 13, 1791.[i] Some time before 1807 he and Sally moved to Readfield, with their family of seven children, and he purchased property from Jesse Dutton[ii]. Four more children were born in Readfield 1808 - 1816. By October 1818 William had enough resources to purchase a parcel of land that sat partly in Winthrop and part in Wayne from David Atkinson. Three years later, on the 1820 US Census his household included eleven people – four of them males over 16yrs. The census record shows that five in the household were engaged in agriculture. William purchased three more parcels in Wayne in 1831 from Comfort Smith; 1840 from Seth Maxim; and 1846 from Sumner Moulton.

Three of William’s children were married in Readfield to Sturtevant’s from nearby in Winthrop. Anna married to Constant Sturtevant in 1828; Mary married to Garmaliel Sturtevant in 1830; and William married Polly Sturtevant in 1833. Other familiar names of Readfield and the Macomber’s neighborhood also married into the Macomber family: Sally Macomber in 1812 to Franklin Bean of Readfield; Saunders Macomber in 1825 to Julia Bean of Readfield; Lewis Martin Macomber in 1837 to Mary Jewitt of Readfield. William’s son Noah married a Dutton – no doubt related to Jesse Dutton.

William died August 29, 1843 age 76 yrs and his wife Sarah died December 12, 1855 age 84 yrs. Both are buried in Huntoon Cemetery near their home.
