Joseph Hutchinson (1750-1828) b.8/4/1750 in Kingston, NH s/o Ebenezer & Elizabeth (Marsh) Hutchinson. In 1772 his brother Theophilus was awarded a 200 acre lot in East Readfield (then p/o Winthrop) and both brothers appeared on the 1790 Census in Winthrop as did their brother Henry. Another brother, John (on the census as Hutchings), was on the 1790 Census in Mt. Vernon. All four of them appeared on the Readfield 1791 tax payers list.
Theophilus and Joseph's closest neighbors were the Whittier brothers. Joseph m.1785 Nancy Anna Whittier (1766-1819) d/o Benjamin & Mary (Joy) Whittier. Benjamin came with his brothers Nathaniel Jr., Thomas and William in 1765 to help settle East Readfield. Benjamin & Mary Whittier soon moved on to live on the Sandy River (Farmington area) where he and his wife both d.1822. Benjamin Whittier's brothers remained neighbors to the Hutchinsons in East Readfield for several years before William moved to Mt. Vernon and Thomas to the Belfast area.
Joseph came to own 200 acres, lot #218 which he sold off in 5 parcels between 1803 and 1821. See his brother Henry's profile FMI about that. He also owned the upper saw mill on Belgrade Stream running out of Quimby Bog. The lower saw mill was owned by Dr. Samuel Quimby of Mt. Vernon. His mill was located in Mt. Vernon while Hutchinson's was in Readfield. Both show on the 1856 map. In 1821 Hutchinson sold 1/4 interest in the mill to his son-in-law Harvey Porter of Mt. Vernon plus enough land for a log yard (deed bk 40 pg 233). The Porter family lived on Sadie Dunn Road, not far from Quimby Mills. Two years later Porter and his wife Polly bought Hutchinson's homestead in Readfield - see below FMI.
Theophilus Hutchinson sold his homestead to brother Joseph for $2,500 in 1808 (deed bk 15 pg 411). Joseph and Theophilus were living there alone in 1820. Joseph's wife had died the previous year and most of his children were grown by that time. I do not know where 12 year old Henry was living since the U.S. Censuses do not list all names in households until 1850. He could have been living with his older sister Polly. In Nov. 1822 Joseph borrowed $1,500 from Dudley Fogg of Readfield against his homestead; and a month later he did the same from his brother Theophilus for $500. Given those transactions and in 1818 he'd borrowed $680 from Joshua Gage, Esq. of Augusta, it becomes apparent that Hutchinson ran into financial difficulty. In 1823 Fogg sold 165 acres of the farm for $2,000 to Joseph's son-in-law Harvey Porter of Mt. Vernon - his wife being Polly (Hutchinson). Perhaps the young couple was rescuing the family homestead from foreclosure, and they may well have moved there from Mt. Vernon to care for the aging brothers? Theophilus d.1827 and Joseph b.1828. That same summer of 1828 the Porters sold the homestead and returned to live in Mt. Vernon.

3) Joseph Jr. 1790-1850 m1.1811 Polly Coy (1790-1830) d/o Daniel & Apphia (French) Coy of Readfield. Joseph & Polly had 9 ch including J.J. Hutchinson (1814-1884) who operated Hutchinson's Tavern at Readfield Depot with his wife Mary (Greeley) for many years. Joseph Jr. m2.1832 Mahala Jones (1802-1881) no ch. In 1813 Joseph Jr.'s father sold him 50 acres p/o #218, near Readfield Depot. The road leading to his farm became known as Hutchinson or Hutchins Rd (Luce Rd. 2020). That Hutchinson farm is no longer there. (KC deed bk24 pg482)
