Josiah Mitchell was born in Scarborough 1 Mar 1748 to Christopher Mitchell and
Deborah Mills. He married Eunice (Milbury) Grover 21 Feb 1774 in Augusta (or
Hallowell) and they had 9 children. Josiah served as a
Private in the Revolutionary War from 17 Mar 1778 to 17 Mar 1779 when he was
honorably discharged at Rareton, NJ. He served in the Company commanded
by Captain William Mills, in a Corps of Artificers under Colonel Laomi Baldwin
of the Massachusetts line in the Continental Army. He fought in the battle of
Monmouth. Josiah would later serve as a Captain in the local militia. When Josiah entered the
war and for several years afterwards up to 1781 he and his family resided at
Kennebunk, at which time he move to Winthrop in the part of that town that
later would become Readfield. He resided there until he moved to Bridgetown
Plantation (later Joy, then later Troy) by 1810. He held many town
positions in Readfield including surveyor, constable, inn keeper, and deputy
post master.
In 1780 Mitchell bought 100 acres for 40 £ lawful money, the southern half of lot #213 (Lincoln County Deeds Book1 Page411) from Joseph Baker. There is no mention of buildings on this deed. (Note: Readfield was part of Winthrop until 1791). The exact location of where he built a home is not known at this time but most likely it was near the northeast intersection of Church Road and Main Street at Readfield Corner.
