Readfield, Kennebec County, Maine was originally incorporated in 1771 as part of Winthrop. Twenty years later residents voted almost unanimously to separate from Winthrop, and Readfield became incorporated on March 11, 1791. LADD, Simeon, Jr. 1810 US Census Readfield 2-1-1-1

Simeon Ladd, Jr. b.2/23/1780 in Nottingham, NH, a son of Simeon and  Betsey (Haines) Ladd. When he was about 17 years old he moved from Epping, NH [1] to Winthrop, ME with his parents and three siblings where they settled on the road to North Monmouth. [2] In March and July 1803 he received two deeds for property in Winthrop from his father. [3] The following year, on March 3, 1804 he married Mercy Folsom of Mt. Vernon, ME. She was born August 24, 1784 in Mt. Vernon the daughter of Nathaniel and Susanna (Folsom) Folsom. Nathaniel was a Revolutionary War Veteran who enlisted in Deering, NH but moved to Mt. Vernon soon after the American Revolution. Two of his children married into

the Ladd family. In 1806 [4] Simeon received a bond for deed [5] from Joel Bean, who bought and sold a significant amount of land in Readfield in that time period. Six months later Simeon received the deed, having paid installments to Joel Bean as agreed. [6] Simeon Ladd, Jr. built his farmhouse about one mile north of Readfield Corner on Church Road. [7]

Simeon’s first wife, Mercy, died September 1, 1820 at age 36years. She left behind her husband and five children. On December 22, 1821 he married Mrs. Lydia Sherburne. She was born June 11, 1789 in Readfield the daughter of Moses Whittier. [8] Her first marriage was in 1814 to Job Sherburne, Jr. [9]  The Ladds were devout Baptists and in 1828 were among the originators of the Dunn’s Corner Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. [10] Lydia had one daughter, Lydia born 1817, by her first marriage and with Simeon there were three more including Cyrus A. Ladd, who was deeded his father’s property in 1856. The farmhouse is not longer there but was located in what is not a pasture across the road from the home of Brandon and Jessica Fike (2013) about 150 feet from the road and can be identified by a clump of trees that remain. [11] [12] Simeon and Lydia Ladd are buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery on the same lot with son Cyrus, his wife and three of his children.

  1. Gorham b.1808 Readfield d.1868 Winthrop, ME. He m. Charlotte Whittier she b.1806 in Readfield the daughter of Josiah and Polly (Shepard) Whittier and granddaughter of Moses Whittier. She d.1880 in Winthrop. 
  2. Three children of Gorham and Charlotte (Whittier) Ladd: i. Lydia Ann b.1839 Readfield d.1880 m.1863 Gustavus Smith b.1829 in Readfield son of Carpenter and Reliance(Stone) Smith. He d.1921 Readfield. They lived on the Smith Homestead, Sturtevant Hill Road. ii. Orrin G. b.1842 d.1877 iii. John Almond b.1844 d.1890. 
  3. Paul b.1810 Readfield d.1872 Mt. Vernon m. 1835 Hannah S. Whittier b.1813 Readfield daughter of Josiah and Polly (Shepard) Whittier. She d.1896 Mt. Vernon, ME. Five children of Paul and Hannah (Whittier) Ladd: i. Hiram A. b.1835 Fayette, ME d.1911 Wilton, ME. m.1863 Pamelia Caroline Wiggin [13] in Mt. Vernon. She b.1845 Mt. Vernon daughter of Stephen and Mithy Wiggin. d.1896 Vienna, ME ii. Horace A. b.1837 Fayette, ME d.1867 Mt. Vernon, ME. iii. Mary Ann b.1839 Fayette d.1866 Mt.   4. Warren b.1812 Readfield d.1892 Readfield. m1. 1842 Lydia Elizabeth Wellman. She b.1819 Belgrade, ME daughter of John and Lydia (Braley) Wellman. She d.1849 Readfield. Warren m2. Emeline D. She b.1818 d.1903 Oakland, ME where she was living with daughter Ora and family. He lived in School District #10 in Readfield where in 1850 he owned taxable real estate valued at $800. By 1880 he was living in Wayne. Four children of Warren and Lydia (Wellman) Ladd: i. Emily Elizabeth b.1848 Readfield d.1917 Readfield m.1868 Daniel Luce in North Wayne. He b.1840 Readfield son of Thomas and Mehitable (Hodges) Luce. He d.1907 Readfield. They lived on the Dan Luce Road, Readfield and (in 2013) the Emily Luce Memorial Forest is named in Emily’s memory. ii. Warren Dudley b.1843 Readfield d.1924 Readfield m1.1872 Betsey Huntoon Williams. She b.1840 Readfield daughter of David C. and Mary Ann (Huntoon) Williams. She died 1893 Readfield. Warren Dudley m2.1893 Sadie Ann Greenwood. She b.1855 Watertown, NY d.1943 He was a contractor and builder living on Nickerson Hill Road, Readfield near the Williams family. iii. Sarah Norton b.1848 d.1867 Readfield iv. Cyrus Augustus b.1846 Readfield d.1929 Wayne. m.1875 Katherine Smith. She b.1851 d.1924 Wayne. Child of Warren and Emeline D. Ladd: v.Ora A. b.1867 North Wayne d.1951 Readfield m.1892 Frank L. Hersom. He b.1862 d.1944 Readfield.
  5. Harvey b.1814 d.1892 Readfield m.1839 Laura Ann Packard of Readfield. She b.1818 daughter of Joshua III and Harriett (Hall) Packard of Kents Hill. She d.1846 Readfield. Harvey lived in School District #10 in Readfield. He learned the carpenter trade from his father-in-law - a third generation member of the Packard family on Kents Hill who were well known for their carpentry skills. [14]
  6. Two children of Harvey and Laura (Packard) Ladd: i. Laura F. b.1843 Readfield  ii. Harriett E. b.1841 Readfield
  7. Hiram b.1816 Readfield d.1880 Winthrop m.1847 Julia Ann Dexter. She b.1823 Winthrop daughter of Freeman and Abigail (Harvey) Dexter. She d.1899 Winthrop. Lived in Winthrop on the Simeon Ladd, Sr. Homestead where he farmed. Child: i.Mittie A. b.1851 d.1905 Winthrop m.1870 Charles Stanton. They were living with her parents on the Ladd homestead on Harvey Corner, Pisgah Road, [15] Winthrop in 1880. [16]

6.  Cyrus Augustus b.1822 d.1895 Readfield m. 1862 Louisa S. Cram She b.1838 Belgrade      daughter  of Thomas and Hannah (Abbott) Cram. She d.1919 Readfield. They lived on the original Ladd Homestead on Church Road, Readfield. Buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery with three of their children and Cyrus’ parents. Four Children of Cyrus and Louisa (Cram) Ladd:

This tree lined driveway once led to the brick house that was home to Fred "Gus" Turner and Lydia (Ladd) Turner (see I below). It burned in the mid 20th century when the residence of Kenneth and Lois Turner. It was located directly across the road from the end of Fogg Road (2013)

i. Lydia E. b.1863 d.1940 Readfield m.1892 Fred Augustus Turner of Palermo, ME. He b. 1859 Palermo, ME d.1949 Augusta, ME. Both are buried in China, ME in Weeks Mills Cemetery. They lived on Church Road across from the Fogg Road intersection in a brick Cape Cod style house. This home was destroyed by fire. Their son Merle then grandson Kenneth subsequently owned this home. Four children of Fred and Lydia (Ladd) Turner were Nellie b.1893 d.1980 Merle b.1894 d.1974 Inez b.1898 d.1984 m. Samuel W. Fogg, Sr. and Lawrence b.1907 ii. Frank b.1864 Readfield iii. Nellie E. b.1867 d.1872 Readfield iv. Mary J. b.1870 d.1921 Readfield.

Three children of Hiram and Mary (Ladd) Wellman: i. John Llewellyn b.1847 Belgrade d.1914 Rochester, NH m.1870 in Lewiston, ME to Martha Ann Simpson d/o Winslow and Hannah (McCausland) Simpson of Winslow, ME ii. Luella Augusta b.1855 Belgrade d.after 1917 m1.1879 Frank Hussey in Worcester, MA m2.1894 Everett Smith Boody in Haverhill, MA iii. Laura Ann b.1859 Belgrade d.1875 Winthrop.
