Readfield, Kennebec County, Maine was originally incorporated in 1771 as part of Winthrop. Twenty years later residents voted almost unanimously to separate from Winthrop, and Readfield became incorporated on March 11, 1791. LUCE, Beriah 1790 U.S. Census Winthrop 1-0-3-0-0

Beriah[I] Luce was born in 1731 in Tisbury, MA.  He married 16 Jan 1752 to Remember Foster daughter of Benjamin and Maria (Tobey) Foster of Tisbury, MA.  Beriah (misspelled Uriah on 1790 US Census) came to Readfield (then Winthrop) about 1780, from Martha's Vineyard, and settled on Lot#94 (now near the Winthrop and Wayne town boundaries). The Luce men came from a long line of sea captains. Children: 1) Ellis b. 16 Jan 1752 settled near Readfield Depot. 2) Shubael Luce b. 1754 settled on his father’s homestead 3) Prince Luce b. 1764 d. 1846 m. Mary Howland Prince settled in the northeastern part of Readfield and is the progenitor of Luce descendents many of us grew up with in Readfield.
