John Hutchings, Sr. (1747-1824) was listed on the Readfield 1791 taxpayers list and on the 1790 Census in Washington Plantation, which it was named until incorporated as Mt. Vernon in 1792.
He married in N.H. about 1768 to Elizabeth MNU (1749-1842). Exactly when they moved to central Maine is not known other than the above and their son Joseph was supposed to have d.1785 in Readfield.
1.Joseph b.1768 d.1785 Readfield
2. John, Jr. b.1769 d.unk
3. Henry b.1770 d.1847
4. Salley b.1779
5. William b.unk.
In March, 1802 John Sr. gave his occupation as cooper and residence as Mt. Vernon when he sold land in New Sharon to his son John Jr. His son was also a resident of Mt. Vernon at that time. (Kennebec County deed bk 50 pg 189) Between March, 1802 and Jan, 1803 they left Mt. Vernon for New Sharon, their land being 50 acres p/o lot #33 on the south side of the Sandy River. (Kennebec County deed bk 5 pg 92). On Sept.14, 1824 John Hutchings of New Sharon sold said land for $60 to Robert Vose, Esq. of Augusta. No Jr. is noted after this name on the deed - sons usually dropped Jr. after a father's death. The date Sept. 14th was the same day as Sr.'s probate was recorded so this transaction was probably to arrange for Vose, Esq. to settle the estate (deed bk 50 pg 194)
Believed this is John Hutchinson, brother of Theophilus, Joseph and Henry Hutchinson who all moved to Readfield before 1790 and also appear on the 1791 Readfield taxpayer list. The Hutchinson name is recorded in various ways on old documents and maps. For one, Joseph and Theophilus names appear as Hutchins on a Kennebec County deed dated 1788 (bk 48 pg 395). John d.1824 in New Sharon as did Henry which also leads one to believe this was their brother John. They were the sons of Ebenezer & Elizabeth (Marsh) Hutchinson of Kingston, NH. There was one daughter, Elizabeth, b.1752 but nothing more is known about her.
In 1816 a Samuel & Sally Hutchings of New Portland, ME sold 16 acres of land they owned in Readfield, to Ebenezer Richardson of Mt. Vernon. This Samuel was likely another relative, perhaps a brother? Or could John's daughter Sally have married a cousin which would explain why she was a co-grantor on the deed - unusual for the woman's name to appear except at the end of the deed as a release of dower. Unfortunately the deed does not point to a previous deed but one must wonder if this was the Readfield land owned by John Hutchings in 1791?
